Philippine Trade & Investment Centre-Singapore Commercial Counsellor and ASEAN Team Leader Glenn Peñaranda was invited to speak on “Engaging ASEAN as an Investment Partner” at the recent ZAMPEN Investment Conference (ICON) in Zamboanga City, Philippines. The conference was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Region 9, in collaboration with the Philippine Board of Investments and the Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He highlighted that ASEAN neighbors are interested not only in the Philippine market but in access to raw materials for processing for both the local, regional and global markets. He also shared the diverse investment trends in ASEAN particularly in Singapore and Malaysia. A key trend is their commitment to food safety and halal.

Mr. Peñaranda said that ZAMPEN has a compelling story to tell. Noting the increasing interest in sustainable food sourcing and the ongoing implementation of the closed-season for the Sardines industry. Some world-renowned chefs have been promoting sardines, anchovies and other similar fish in their menu to ease pressure on the popular but endangered fish species.

While in Zamboanga, Mr. Peñaranda met with various government and private groups to discuss food exports, the promotion of the Halal Hub at the Zamboanga City Ecozone, potential partners for rubber processing and the promotion of the mango and coconut products.

The aim of the two-day conference was to identify ways to facilitate mobilization of investments in support of sustainable and inclusive growth in the region.
